Hotel Description

You know what’s funny about Matelotte? I’d walked past that little street – Traverse de la Matelotte – probably a dozen times before I even noticed there was a hotel tucked back there. It’s one of those Saint-Tropez secrets that locals don’t really think to mention, but once you find it, you sort of feel like you’ve discovered something special.

The thing about this place is that it manages to be properly nice (we’re talking 4-star nice) without any of that stuffy, intimidating vibe you sometimes get in Saint-Tropez. Honestly, when I first walked into the lobby, my immediate thought was “oh, this feels like someone’s really elegant home” – you know, the kind where you’re not afraid to actually sit on the furniture. The staff actually remembers your name after day one, which sounds small but makes such a difference when you’re trying to figure out dinner reservations or need decent directions to anywhere that isn’t crawling with tourists. And speaking of tourists – here’s the beautiful thing about that location. You’re close enough to walk to Port de Saint-Tropez (maybe 8-10 minutes if you don’t get distracted by the shops), but far enough from the main drag that you’re not dealing with the crowds stumbling back from the clubs at 3 AM.

I mean, let’s be real about Saint-Tropez – it can be a lot. But there’s something about retreating to Matelotte at the end of the day that just works. The rooms have this lived-in elegance thing going on, where everything’s clearly high quality but not so precious that you’re afraid to toss your beach bag in the corner. The beds are actually comfortable (I’m looking at you, boutique hotels with your rock-hard “luxury” mattresses), and the bathrooms have that satisfying weight to the fixtures that tells you someone cared about the details. What really sold me though was sitting on my little balcony with morning coffee, listening to the sounds of the neighborhood waking up – actual Saint-Tropez life, not just the tourist show. You hear shopkeepers chatting, delivery trucks making their rounds, kids heading to school when it’s not summer.

The breakfast situation deserves a mention too – it’s one of those spreads where you can tell they’re working with local suppliers because everything just tastes like the best version of itself. Fresh croissants that are actually warm, not just heated up, and coffee that doesn’t make you immediately start plotting a walk to find something better. Parking can be a bit of a puzzle (this is Saint-Tropez, after all), but the hotel folks are pretty resourceful about helping you sort it out. I’d definitely book directly with them and ask about it ahead of time. With a 9.4 rating, I’m clearly not the only one who thinks they’ve got something good going on here – but honestly, it still feels like one of those places that hasn’t quite hit everyone’s radar yet, which is exactly why you should probably know about it.
